Naruto Tattoos

Art from the hidden leaf village

Artist Note:

Naruto has always been one of my favorites because of not only the heavy nostalgia factor, but also because of the emotional depth of the story. I found it incredibly frustrating watching how hard Naruto would work only to fail, but this made his successes all the more powerful. I've custom designed many versions of Naruto, and I've also played quite a bit with Kakashi tattoos. A few of my favorite things to try and highlight or implement into Naruto tattoos is the sharingan, a spiral, or the akatsuki cloud. For my clients and me, Naruto tattoos are not just about visuals - they put perseverance, growth, and personal identity on display.

Tattooing a Custom Naruto: Only a Genin goes for Anything Less

So many otakus started their anime journey with Naruto - if they were from my generation, they were tuning in to Toonami on Cartoon Network to catch the latest episode before parents shooed them off to bed. If they are of the younger lot, they were hearing about it from their friends, borrowing the DVD collections or peeling through the manga at the local bookstore. Then there's of course the COVID otakus - fresh weebs stepping out from their quarantine, minds filled to the brim with anime knowledge from a long while of streaming.

Naruto tattoos have been around for a long while, however, most were of the simple kind like symbols or basic manga panels. But now, with the more recent boost of talented anime tattoo artists meeting the demands of the anime craze, we are seeing much more complex and dynamic Naruto tattoos hitting the scene. I've found that Naruto tattoos tend to trend the most online - almost as much as One Piece Tattoos. Even the small, simple, and common tattoos like the Sharingan, Nine paths seal, or Minato's kunai garner attention from die-hard fans. But what about the custom ones? The large colorwork Naruto tattoos that perform some sort of magnetic jutsu to demand everyone's attention? Those are the ones that really slap, and they control the scene like the ANBU Black Ops..

My favorite part of designing a Naruto or Kakashi tattoo is merging the unique style of the anime and manga into my own style without making it unrecognizable. There is a charm in the Naruto-Shippuden animation, or in the way that Masashi Kishimoto created so much energy and power on a 2D page. I draw everything from scratch - it's just how my process works for me. While some artists take direct screenshots of the show, manga, or original illustrations, I just won't. I much prefer to sketch it out, flesh it out, and render it. It keeps the design fresh in mind, and then later during the tattoo session, it's fresh in my hand because of all the sketching and composing I did for it. When you choose me for your Naruto tattoo dreams, you'll receive a one-of-a-kind original that you can truly call your own.

The Secret Jutsu of Designing a Custom Kakashi or Shikamaru Tattoo

The first hand sign to begin the process is to simply point me in the right direction; inspired by Naruto's mastery of the rasengan? Let's put it to skin. Or - are you diehard ramen fanatic and feel that Naruto is your kindred spirit? Let's go. This large thigh tattoo was completed in 3 back-to-back all-day sessions - and my client wanted to share her love for ramen in the coolest way possible: she chose one of my pre-drawn designs to claim as her own.

To prepare for this epic battle, my client ate a nutritious meal beforehand and stayed hydrated throughout. Each day, mid-session we'd stop to refuel before getting back to tattooing full force. When you book a back-to-back marathon with me, I will do my best to keep your energy, endurance, and spirits high so we can keep the energy flowing. While typically I recommend booking tattoos 1-2 months apart for optimal healing time, some clients choose to get it over with due to travel expenses and time off work.

From Shikamaru's Revenge to an Epic Naruto Sleeve

It's never surprising to me when a client gets one tattoo completed, and then reaches out for more. But when they return with a whole idea for a sleeve!? That's always exciting. We started with an awesome dedication to the greatly satisfying revenge Shikamaru achieved against Hidan. My client specifically wanted the scene when Shikamaru throws the lighter, but he had another thought - to add the kanji from his Shogi piece, the Knight. This was going to be an upper arm tattoo, and so I designed it to fit the space accordingly, making sure to go with the flow of the arm's anatomy. After 2.5 sessions, we arrived at the final result.

Later, my client would reach out for more, only this time, to continue this piece into a full sleeve with the same shogi-piece theme. We started with Hidan and Kakuzu on the inner arm - their respective pieces being Bishop and Rook. Then we finished the sleeve with the Silver General, Kakashi on the outer forearm.

This anime forearm tattoo is of Kakuzu from from Naruto by Orlando, Florida anime tattoo artist Ren Behan. This anime portrait of Kakuzu features the kanji for bishop, which fans believe represents his role perfectly in the game of Shoji.
Inner arm Naruto tattoo of Hidan by Orlando, Florida anime tattoo artist Ren Behan. This Hidan tattoo focuses on his death god form with the kanji for Rook from the game shoji - fans feel this shoji piece represents him perfectly in Shikamaru's famous revenge.
Outer forearm anime tattoo of Kakashi by Orlando, Florida anime tattoo artist Ren Behan. This Kakashi tattoo draws the eye with rich blues and striking contrasts as Kakashi performs his Chidori attack. The kanji featured is for the Silver General piece in shoji, a piece that fans feel represent Kakashi perfectly in the story.

My favorite thing about anime tattoo sleeves like this is the cohesion and flow of color - everything blends beautifully into the next, and follows a structured theme. From across the room, there is no doubt what the sleeve is all about. The added kanji elements add a nice flair to each section. You can't beat that when it comes to large anime projects! Pair that with an awesome heal, and you've got the perfect otaku tattoo to show off your fandoms.

Naruto Tattoo Design Details: Sharingan, Akatsuki Clouds, and More!

Sure, it's always a good choice to do an epic character portrait of your favorite Naruto character, but what about the accents that make the piece more visually striking than a pretty face? There are so many ways to tie in the meaningful symbolism of the show's many unique motifs, art, calling-cards, etc...it's just about finding the right one for the composition and character! With this Tobi tattoo (or rather, Obito tattoo - sorry, it's been long enough), we did just that!

Forearm anime tattoo of Obito from Naruto by Orlando, Florida anime tattoo artist Ren Behan. This Obito tattoo (Tobi tattoo) focuses on the dramatic moment where his mask broke during his fight with Konan.

What an awesome moment to capture in the skin - that epic fight with Konan in the Hidden Rain Village was when we got our first reveal of Tobi's face, and a hit at who he truly was. I was so thrilled my client requested this, and I had a blast finding ways to make a small forearm space work for a dynamic anime portrait tattoo.

The Akatsuki cloud swirl with the see-through red, rain droplets, and that beaming red glow from his left eye was just -chef's kiss- beautiful. We took a simple portrait and made it so much more powerful - capturing the essence of this critical moment.

Similarly, we achieved the same goal with a tight space that an inner bicep provides; with an area like this, you're constrained to a space with little length, barely being able to fit more than just a face at a proper size. When my client requested a Reaper Seal tattoo, I was ecstatic! As much as I absolutely adore tattooing the main cast, this guy is just too freaking cool looking to pass up! He also filled his inner arm so well, and the spirit cloud and drool embellishments just play so well with the cold tones of the piece.

Naruto Tattoos FAQ

Can you design a Naruto tattoo sleeve or backpiece? What is the process like?

The first step in the process is to reach out and brainstorm! Together, we will discuss your vision for your Naruto sleeve or backpiece and come up with the best layout to display your favorite characters. Sleeves and backpieces are multi-session large projects that are completed over time. In some cases, people opt to do back-to-back sessions to knock out as much as possible. However, for the body to have the best healing experience, I always recommend spacing sessions out by 1-2 months at a time. These large projects can take between 6-8 sessions to complete.

Ultimately, I specialize in what is essentially large-scale storytelling. It's the illustrator in me! Whether you want a Tailed Beast, Ninja, or even a summon like the Toads of Mount Myoboku - I design the composition as a cohesive flow that follows the natural movement of your arm or leg (or even a backpiece!). I more often than not have a general full concept in my head for the entire piece and I design a section at a time as we go. However, for some projects, I'll design the whole sleeve before we begin.

How much does a Naruto tattoo cost?

Because I design every tattoo from scratch and fully custom for you, the number of sessions we need will vary depending on a number of factors: placement and its proportions, your pain tolerance, the complexity of the design, and the style. I work in all-day and half-day flat rates, and because of my 8+ years of experience tattooing, I have a pretty solid idea of how much time a tattoo will take me. For a quote, please fill out the booking form with your idea, character choice, and placement - we'll discuss a game plan, and when you're ready, lock in!

Do I need to provide a reference or manga panel?

Not necessarily. But you are welcome to send them my way to help me better understand your vision! However, please keep in mind I never directly copy references - I only use them to solidify my own understanding of what you may be seeking. The reference provides the mood or direction, then I sketch and render a completely unique vision for the piece! This ensures your Naruto tattoo is that one-of-a-kind art you won't see on everybody else.

Does a full-color tattoo hold up over time?

You betcha! My job is to apply it efficiently, and your job is to take charge of the aftercare and the long-term skin care. This ensures it will last a lifetime. Consistent aftercare and long-term skin care help color tattoos look their best. Healing properly, avoiding unnecessary picking or friction, and protecting tattoos from frequent sun exposure can all help preserve clarity and vibrancy over long periods of time.

For my part to play - my process focuses on the foundations of fine art and tattooing, which means using strong contrasts against saturated color that is built for long-term clarity and vibrancy. You can check out my healed anime tattoos section to see how my colorwork ages and settles into the skin.

How can I travel to Orlando, Florida for a Naruto Tattoo?

I frequently work with clients who travel from across Florida, the US, and even from abroad to get custom anime tattoos. Since many of my projects are large-scale, we can discuss scheduling and timelines, and consider back-to-back sessions if you are traveling from afar so we can maximize your trip out as much as possible.

For travel logistics and advice, check out my Orlando Tattoo Travel Guide - I had a handful of my frequent traveler clients help me build it specifically for when they come out to see me at xsadfamx!

How far in advance should I book?

My books generally fill up for 6-10 months at a time. I announce booking periods for when I'm accepting inquiries to lock in for later in the same year or into the next year depending on timing. You can check my booking form page for details, and when you're ready, reach out so we can make art together!
