Large Anime Tattoos

Sleeves, Backpieces, and More!

Artist Note:

Large pieces like half-sleeves, full-sleeves, back pieces, or even torso pieces allow us to really go all out and break limits! It's with projects like these that things really open up creatively! Clashing characters, momentous scenes, and dynamic angles all in one large cohesive design. My focus is always on the flow of the space - be it a leg, an arm, or an entire back - we're gonna make it flow, make it readable, and make it last a lifetime. Whether you already have a clear idea or a general concept, I'll make sure to plan out a massive piece that feels balanced and completely custom!

Large Anime Tattoos: Designed to Flow, Built Over Time

Large-scale tattoos are a completely different beast than getting one standalone piece. A sleeve, backpiece, torso project, or leg sleeve takes more dedication to the course of time, but will give us so much more room to build something that feels like a full illustration than just a collection of small tattoos.

When I design a large project, I think about the whole area first - not just the character we are starting with that day. I pay attention to the body's natural movement, the shapes of the muscles, how the piece will read from different angles, and where we need open space so the design doesn't feel crowded as it grows. The goal is to make every section feel connected to the next - to feel intentional and strong on its own while still contributing to the bigger picture as a whole.

That can mean creating a dynamic action-heavy scene with multiple characters building a cohesive theme around one series, or combining favorite characters and moments from different anime into something personal to you. Background elements, effects, color transitions, and composition all help guide the eye across the body and bring the full project together.

Starting the Design

You do not need to arrive with every single detail planned out. Some clients come to me with a full sleeve concept in mind; others only know the series, a favorite character, or the general placement they want. Both are totally fine!

We start by brainstorming the idea, the placement, the scale, and what matters most to you. From there, I help determine the strongest layout for the placement and how we can make the concept work as a tattoo - not as a 2D image or copy-paste of a screenshot from the show. I always start from scratch and design fully custom to you. If the project will continue over multiple sessions, I keep the larger direction in mind from the beginning so future additions have room to grow naturally.

The Multi-Session Process

Most large anime tattoos are completed over multiple appointments. Depending on the placement, level of detail, amount of color, and how much coverage we are creating, a sleeve or larger project may take several sessions to complete.

I usually recommend spacing sessions about one to two months apart for optimal healing time before we continue. This gives us the best foundation for the next section and helps keep the final result clean, saturated, and as comfortable as possible for the client throughout the process.

Some projects are planned from start to finish before the first appointment. Most of the time, however, I build the sleeve or larger piece section by section, allowing myself to adapt to the movement of the piece into the next for the best final result. What matters most is that we plan ahead and respect the overall flow of the space.

Made for Your Body, Not for Template

Every large-scale tattoo I create is custom drawn for the individual client. I do not use sleeve templates or simply place a flat image onto the arm or leg.

The placement changes everything. An arm bends, twists, and moves constantly; a thigh, calf, back, or torso has its own shapes and focal areas depending on the individual. I design with those things in mind so characters, expressions, action poses, and effects are placed where they will read the best. Strong composition and contrast are especially important in colorwork, both for impact on day one and for clarity as the tattoo heals and settles over time.

The end goal is not just a cool character tattoo - it's a cohesive piece of wearable art that feels personal and special.

Large-Scale Anime Tattoo Project FAQ

What is the process like for designing a large-scale tattoo?

The first step in the process is to reach out and brainstorm! Together, we will discuss your vision for your large tattoo, sleeve, or backpiece and come up with the best layout to display your favorite characters. Sleeves and backpieces are multi-session large projects that are completed over time. In some cases, people opt to do back-to-back sessions to knock out as much as possible. However, for the body to have the best healing experience, I always recommend spacing sessions out by 1-2 months at a time. These large projects can take between 6-8 sessions to complete.

Ultimately, I specialize in what is essentially large-scale storytelling. It's the illustrator in me! I design the composition as a cohesive flow that follows the natural movement of your arm or leg (or even a backpiece!). I more often than not have a general full concept in my head for the entire piece and I design a section at a time as we go. However, for some projects, I'll design the whole sleeve before we begin.

How much does a large anime tattoo cost?

Because I design every tattoo from scratch and fully custom for you, the number of sessions we need will vary depending on a number of factors: placement and its proportions, your pain tolerance, the complexity of the design, and the style. I work in all-day and half-day flat rates, and because of my 8+ years of experience tattooing, I have a pretty solid idea of how much time a tattoo will take me. For a quote, please fill out the booking form with your idea, character choice, and placement - we'll discuss a game plan, and when you're ready, lock in!

How can I travel to Orlando, Florida for my large anime tattoo?

I frequently work with clients who travel from across Florida, the US, and even from abroad to get custom anime tattoos. Since many of my projects are large-scale, we can discuss scheduling and timelines, and consider back-to-back sessions if you are traveling from afar so we can maximize your trip out as much as possible.

For travel logistics and advice, check out my Orlando Tattoo Travel Guide - I had a handful of my frequent traveler clients help me build it specifically for when they come out to see me at xsadfamx!

How far in advance should I book a project?

My books generally fill up for 6-10 months at a time. I announce booking periods for when I'm accepting inquiries to lock in for later in the same year or into the next year depending on timing. I recommend booking all expected sessions for a project so you know we are good to go for the life of the project, but you can also book each section at a time instead. There really should be no big rush to finish with large tattoo projects! You can check my booking form page for details, and when you're ready, reach out so we can make art together!
